The deeply carved valley of the Weiße Wehe gives this hiking trail its name. The starting point is the "Zum Alten Forsthaus" hotel in Vossenack. The Wehebach originates from the confluence of the "Roter Wehe" and "Weißer Wehe" rivers. In 1981, six Polish beavers were settled in the Weiße Wehe valley. Until the 19th century, the rodents were hunted for their fur, declared fish by the Pope, eaten during Lent and used as an aphrodisiac. The consequence was their almost complete extinction. Today, the Eifel population is once again estimated at 200 to 250 animals. Guided hikes follow the tracks of the beaver. We follow hiking trail no. 46 .

After months of fighting, the area around the "Wilde Sau" forest district had become the "Killing Field" of the Western Front. Regiments of three American divisions, the 9th, 28th and 4th, had fought here and suffered heavy losses.

The trail leads through an area rich in game with many traces of hunters and the hunted. The north-eastern part of the national park borders our route. For thousands of years, people subsisted as hunters and gatherers. The introduction of livestock farming and agriculture not only changed habits, but also the original landscape. The result was a cultivated landscape dominated by humans, which increasingly limited the habitat of game. We follow the hiking trail sign 09.

The watercourses and their floodplains are a typical and ecologically valuable part of the Rureifel with a great wealth of flora and fauna. This diversity is thanks to the farmers who have mowed the meadows for centuries. When modern forms of farming close to villages made haymaking in the valleys no longer worthwhile, spruce trees were planted there. Efforts are currently being made in many places to restore the original floodplain vegetation. The characteristic terracing can be seen in many places along the hiking trail. This occurs when a river is no longer able to transport its debris load and deposits it in the floodplain. If a river deepens again due to a change in climate, it cuts through the previously formed terrace. The formerly swampy valleys of the Eifel only acquired their function as traffic routes after the river regulation at the beginning of the 20th century.

In the winter of 1944/45, the Second World War raged in the area around Schmidt. Acts of violence and cruelty brought endless suffering to soldiers and civilians. When the killing came to an end in February 1945, what remained were ... Shattered forests, devastated settlements, war scrap and corpses. The seemingly apocalyptic scale of the destruction is no longer really imaginable today. And yet fragments of the horror remain, be it gloomy bunkers or gradually fading traces of deadly battles. Remnants of war material still come to light or skeletal remains of dead soldiers are recovered. Memorials and crosses try to keep the memory of unspeakable suffering alive so that future generations can learn their lessons from a time of terror and violence. With the "Way of the Cross of Peace", the parish of St. Hubertus would like to remind us how fragile peace and freedom are. Start of the hike in Hürtgenwald at the "Brandenburger Tor" parking lot. Follow the signposts of the Eifelverein 05 along the Hürtgenbach in the direction of the Südzipfelder Wehebachtalsperre, but turn off here at Gressenicher Weg and continue in the direction of "Rote Wehe". Follow the course of the stream until the "Alte Zweifaller Straße" junction, turning left into the forest towards the "Weiße Wehe" stream and back to the starting point.

"On the trail of life" is the name of the creation trail near Simmerath-Hirschrott. The project of the "Church in the Eifel National Park" network and the national park administration is intended as a meditative hike. The road takes its name from the post-war period, when coffee smuggling from Belgium was one of the most important sources of income for the people of Schmidt. Schmidt was over 90% destroyed at the end of the Second World War, including the parish church of St. Hubertus. With the profits from smuggling coffee across the nearby border, the people of Schmidt got their families through and rebuilt their destroyed houses. Of course, this did not go unnoticed by the parish priest at the time, Josef Beyer. The reconstruction of the church initially progressed somewhat less quickly. He said in a sermon: "I know that you are getting a headache from all the money. For me it's the other way around, because I don't know where I'm going to get the money to rebuild the church." From now on, the smugglers sacrificed part of their profits from the coffee business to rebuild the church. church. This is why it is popularly known as St. Mokka.
