Kankter Hof

The former Joussen farm on Dechant-Brock-Straße was one of the oldest farms in Mausbach. Its last operator was Bernhard Joussen (1882-1970). When Bernhard Joussen passed away, there were no successors. The Kankter Hof was demolished in 1979, and construction of the current residential buildings began in 1980.

An old Mausbach farm – the “Kankter Hof”

The former Joussen farm on Dechant-Brock-Straße was among the oldest farms in Mausbach. It was owned by the Joussen family for many generations, but was generally known as the “Kankter Hof”. The last operator was Bernhard Joussen (1882–1970), who traditionally bore the farm name: “Kankter Männ” or “Kankter Ben”.

The name “Kankter Hof” likely derives from the location of the farm at a junction of the former “Essiger Straße” – a street bend or edge, referred to as “Kank” in the Rhenish dialect. Thus, the building received its farm name, which was also passed on to the respective owners.

During World War II, Bernhard Joussen and his neighbor Wilhelm Haas hid to avoid forced evacuation by the Americans. However, they were discovered and detained in the Wiese house at Bernardshammer.

Bernhard Joussen was single and received help from a widow with stable and household chores. He kept his own horses on the farm and also took in horses for boarding, including from Hubert Hamacher. In the late 1960s, the family Hans Esser lived on the farm, ran a riding operation, and provided ponies at the swimming facility in Schevenhütte. In the 1970s, the Esser family emigrated to Canada.

After the death of Bernhard Joussen, there were no successors. The Kankter Hof was demolished in 1979, and the construction of the current residential buildings began in 1980 in its place.
