Kapelle Heiliger Nikolaus

The chapel was dedicated to Saint Nicholas, the patron of traveling merchants, and was built in the 17th century.

Location of a chapel until 1880

The district of Fleuth developed along an important trade route, the Düren-Eupen road, which passed through Schevenhütte and Krewinkel. The chapel dedicated to Saint Nicholas, patron of traveling merchants, was probably built as early as the 16th or 17th century. In the years 1748/1749, a document states: “[…] the decayed St. Nicholas chapel at the Flutt shall be rebuilt […]”, indicating the great age of the chapel.

The name "Fleuth" probably derives from the small forest stream that can swell considerably during heavy rainfalls. For centuries, Saint Nicholas has been present in popular belief, which is why the oldest chapel in the Mausbacher area was dedicated to him.

The chapel was significantly enlarged by Father Arnold (Wolfgang) Salmagne, born in Mausbach. After the dissolution of the Capuchin monastery in Aldenhoven by the French on August 20, 1802, he returned to his parents in Mausbach and became the first pastor of the village.

Father Salmagne received permission from Bishop Markus Berdolet to hold services in the Nicholas chapel for 13 years until the construction of the first church in Mausbach and the establishment of the parish in 1805. In 1880, the chapel was demolished due to its dilapidated state, and a stone station cross for Corpus Christi was erected in its place.
