Hike with the Eifel Association Local Group Heimbach "Schleidener Heights and Valleys"
Sunday, the 20th of September 2026 starting at 10:00 a.m.
Challenging circular hike with the Eifel Association Local Group Heimbach. The hike has a length of nearly 12 km and about 350 meters of elevation gain and loss. The walking time is approximately 4 hours.
Our hike begins at the Pont l'Abbé Tower - a former climbing tower of the fire department. We will learn about the significance of this tower in the past during our hike. Shortly after the start, we already face the first ascent to the Castle of Schleiden. In the Middle Ages, it was still a fortress, albeit without a keep. Later, the destroyed fortress was converted into a castle. Now we proceed down a forest path and a hiking trail to the Dieffenbach, which we initially cross before tackling the steepest ascent of our hike today.
Arriving at the summit, our path leads us through the mostly open landscape with steady ups and downs. There, we will be rewarded with beautiful views and sights of impressive trees. We then leisurely descend back to the creek meadows. We will enjoy the soothing coolness of the Höddelbach under the shade of the trees. Now we are ready for the second-to-last ascent of our hike. Once again, we will have a fantastic view of the Höddelbach valley. Our next highlight is the Eifel viewpoint "Tempelchen". It is a monument from the wars of German unification in the late 19th century. From up here, we have a dreamy view of the city of Schleiden. Our hike is nearing its end after the challenging descent.
We will walk along forestry and meadow paths but also over root-covered hiking trails. There are some ascents; in places, these are steep and require appropriate fitness.
Meeting point: Parking lot Laag (by the glass containers), Heimbach
