Circular hike of 12 km length and about 400 meters of ascent and descent.
Circular hike of 12 km length and approx. 400 meters in ascent and descent. Good sure-footedness is required to participate in the hike. Steep ascents and equally steep descents must be overcome. The walking time is approximately 4 hours.
Together, we will discover the Galaxy Trail in the idyllic Sahrbachtal and embark on a fascinating journey through space and time. On this hike, impressive nature experiences combine with exciting insights into the world of astronomy.
We will first take a time trip through the early years of the Effelsberg radio telescope. It was built in 1971 and, with a mirror diameter of 100 meters, remains one of the largest fully movable radio telescopes on Earth. We will take a close look at this impressive structure. This way, we can appreciate the imposing size of the mirror. We will then continue our hike along the Galaxy Trail. It illustrates the dimensions of our solar system and the Milky Way on a scale of 1:7.7 billion and makes astronomical connections vividly accessible. We will learn interesting facts about planets, stars, galaxies, and the formation of our universe – all explained concisely and clearly on information panels along the way.
At the end of the Galaxy Trail, we will take a short break to recharge. Afterwards, the adventurous part of our hike begins. Here, good sure-footedness is required.
Note: Good sure-footedness must also be ensured without trekking poles, as in some places the path is very narrow, making trekking poles potentially obstructive.
Meeting point: Parking lot Laag (by the glass containers), Heimbach
Participation in the hike is free of charge. However, the hike guide Guido Hendle requests registration by October 17, 2026, at 6 p.m.
