Robert Capa (real name: Endre Ernö Friedmann) is undoubtedly one of the most well-known photographers of the 20th century. He made a name for himself especially as a war photographer. As early as 1938, he was celebrated as the "most famous war photographer in the world." Capa's professional rise coincided with the 1930s, the golden age of photojournalism. His oeuvre is classified as part of so-called humanistic photography: the focus of his work is always on people. The exhibition includes around 100 black-and-white photographs taken between 1936 and 1954.  Capa achieved worldwide fame with the iconic photograph "Death of a Militiaman," taken in 1936 during the Spanish Civil War. The image captures the moment of a soldier's execution. For almost 50 years, this has preoccupied the experts: Is the photo staged, or does it truly depict the moment of death? On June 6, 1944, Capa photographed the Allied landings in Normandy at great personal risk. With his images of the invasion at Omaha Beach, he documented world history. In addition to photographs, the exhibition includes historical documents and reproductions from numerous prominent magazines such as Times, Picture Post, Life, and Vu, for which Capa worked. Some of these exhibits are being shown for the first time in Germany. Capa saw himself as a visual journalist: "If your pictures are not good enough, you weren't close enough." This statement aptly describes Capa's journalistic attitude – proximity to reality, authenticity, and commitment.
