The historic place of pilgrimage in the Rur valley is surmounted by the medieval castle of Burg Hengebach. Charming half-timbered houses, galleries, cosy taverns and sidewalk cafés invite for a walk in a picturesque atmosphere. Also the pilgrimage churches with their art treasures, the glassblowing, Germany’s most beautiful Art Nouveau hydroelectric power plant and the recently opened water information centre Eifel are worth seeing. Heimbach, in the middle of nature protection areas, is a crosspoint of many bicycle and hiking trails. Popular places of excursions are the abbey of Mariawald and Lake Rursee with navigation and possibilities for water sports. Heimbach is recommended as a state-approved climatic spa with different climatic conditions, from a slightly stimulating climate to bland climate.
